Sofia Juarez now missing 5 years, Kennewick, Washington

I am happy to say that the local media in Pasco, Washington did a story to mark the anniversary of Sofia's disappearance. The media in Washington state seems to be good about remembering her.

Little Sofia Juarez disappeared from her Kennewick home this
week five years ago. Her loss continues to impact the community and haunt local
law enforcement.
Juarez was last seen playing with her brother the day before her fifth
birthday. She told her mother she was going to the store with her grandmother's
boyfriend, but when he came back, he said he had gone alone.
Police called it an abduction from the beginning.
“Any time there are children are involved, it becomes a very meaningful
investigation,” said Chris Walters of the Kennewick Police. “People work really
hard to bring closure and find the child, and it's touched the community as a
whole.”
With each passing year, a few new wrinkles of information appear, but fail
to yield results. In 2003 an Amber Alert was issued as police combed houses and
neighborhoods for Juarez.
According to investigators, a child said he saw Juarez walking down the
driveway with a man dressed in all black. Kennewick police say Juarez has been
one of their most stand-out cases of the last decade. They say they still get
leads every month, but they are mostly just theories. So far, none has panned
out.
Sofia's mother, Maria Juarez, told Action News her daughter was shy, and
that she wouldn't go with a stranger without a fuss. She believes whoever took
her child probably knew her.
“It helps because my family is going to be there in the good times and the
bad times,” she said. “But for me, I still got something that's missing, and
that's her.”
Investigators have tried new and different approaches to find Juarez since
she vanished. They plastered photos of the child on semi trucks that crossed the
nation and displayed a large picture of her at the entrance of the
Benton-Franklin Fair. Juarez also appeared on America's Most Wanted, but still
nothing.
Police are still searching, and Juarez's family is still hoping.
“We want her back and we miss her,” said her teary mother.
The Center for Missing and Exploited Children says Juarez's father did not
know her and is not a suspect. Neither is her grandmother's boyfriend.
Investigators did identify a few suspects over the years, one of them a neighbor
who was convicted of a sex crime, but those leads too, were dead ends.
Every day 300 children are reported missing in this country, according to
the Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Sofia Juarez was last seen walking out of her bedroom back in February of
2003.
And she hasn't been seen since.
This new website started by the
Washington State Association of Sheriff's and Police Chiefs will list all the
missing persons in the state, no matter what age.
They hope that the website
will help gather answers to many unsolved missing persons cases.
In
Kennewick, like you mentioned earlier, Sofia Juarez has been missing since 2003,
and police say any extra information will help.
"Anytime that we can get a
website or get people to look at this, somebody may have some information eve if
they think it's small. Like that they may have seen something, that infor could
be critical to solving this case," said Sgt. Scott Child.
Child says they
have assigned a full-time officer specifically for the Juarez case.
And even
posted a poster on the side of a big rig truck.
He
says it is critically important to get the information out to the public within
the first few days.
And hopefully this website helps.

Other missing people with Washington state connections that I have posted on this blog are Cody Haynes (missing from Kittitas), Christopher Kerze (missing from Minnesota but may be in Seattle), and Ashley Martinez (missing from Missouri but suspect found in Olympia). Ritzville, Washington, skull too old to be Sofia Juarez or Cody Haynes

I have sometimes heard that carbon-14 dating is not completely reliable, but still all I can think is, "Thank goodness!" Would age also explain why they could not obtain DNA?

Skull found in field
near Ritzville is 600 to 770 years old

RITZVILLE —
Pieces of a small skull that were found in a field south of town along U.S.
Highway 395 last year have been found to be 600 to 770 years old, Adams County
sheriff Douglas Barger says.
The results of FBI carbon dating ruled out any
link to two missing children in the region, Barger said Monday.
Three bone
fragments that were found on Oct. 12, 2006, after a backfire from a car started
a fire in a field south of Ritzville were quickly identified as pieces of the
skull of a child, but DNA testing was inconclusive.
No other bones or human
remains were found in an ensuing search.
Authorities hoped the remains might
shed some light on the disappearance of 11-year-old Cody Haynes of Kittitas in
September 2004 or 5-year-old Sofia Juarez of Kennewick in February
2003.
Richard Haynes, the missing boy's father, was under scrutiny from
authorities in Kittitas County. He reportedly told investigators he took a
meandering 250-mile drive — including the stretch of U.S. 395 where the bones
were found — in search of auto parts the night his son vanished. He said he
believed his son was a runaway.
The little girl disappeared after being given
$1 by her mother to buy candy at a convenience store.
The carbon-14 testing
made it clear that the skull pieces were from an American Indian, so steps are
being taken under federal law to return the bone fragments to tribal
authorities, Barger said.
The Washington state Department of Archaeology and
Historic Preservation also has been contacted, Undersheriff John W. Hunt said.

Details of Disappearance
Cody resided with his father, Richard Lee Haynes Sr., his four sisters, and Richard's girlfriend, Marla Jaye Harding(sometimes referred to as "Maria Jane Hardin" or "Marla Harding-Haynes"), in a second-floor apartment in the 100 block of north Main Street in downtown Kittitas, Washington in 2004.
Cody disappeared from his family's home between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. on September 12, 2004. He had refused to wash the dishes and Harding punished him by making him sit at the kitchen table for four hours before sending him to his bedroom at about midnight the previous day. Harding told Cody's sisters not to go near his room and told Cody not to leave the room for any reason. Evidently, no one checked on him for close to eighteen hours afterwards. Richard was at work when Cody was sent to his room, but came home later and then left the house in the early morning hours to look for car parts. He did not return until 4:00 p.m.
Cody apparently slipped out unnoticed during this time and arranged his stuffed animals on the bed to make it look like he was asleep. He took a black and green camouflage-patterned bag of clothing with him, but it was later found in a shed near his house. Investigators believe Cody may have hidden the bag there and planned to return for it later. His bicycle was also found in the shed.
There were a few possible sightings of Cody in the local area shortly after his disappearance. A neighbor may have seen him the morning he disappeared, and someone believes they saw him eating potato chips at Johnny's Serv-U later that day. Neither sighting has been confirmed.
Richard notified the police that Cody was gone after he arrived home again that afternoon. Authorities believed at first that the boy had run away from home because he was unhappy at the way he was disciplined, and that he might try to travel to his mother, who lives in Florida. She has served time in prison for child abuse and is not legally allowed to have contact with her son. Cody did not arrive in Florida and his mother has been eliminated as a suspect in his disappearance.
A week after Cody vanished, his sisters were removed from their father's home and placed into foster care. The removal order alleged abuse, neglect and lack of supervision in the Haynes household and was based mainly on the fact that the girls' brother, Cody, had been made to stay in his room for eighteen hours without being allowed to eat, drink, or use the toilet and without being checked on by an adult. Harding stated that he was a rebellious and deceitful child and needed discipline. Cody's sisters have since between declared dependent by the state and are doing well in foster homes.
Richard and Harding, who married sometime after September 2004, have hired lawyers and will not cooperate with investigators about Cody's disappearance. The rest of his family has cooperated fully with police. Before the Haynes children were taken from their home, Richard refused to allow police to question them. The Haynes daughters were remanded to foster care for six months, after which time the issue of their placement will be revisited. The family has a history with Washington Child Protection Services (CPS); late in 2001 and again in 2002, Richard was reported to CPS for possibly physically and emotionally abusing and neglecting his children. Witnesses stated that the Haynes children were made to stand outside for long periods in the wintertime without coats or shoes. Both times the allegations were found to be without merit. Cody was in the sixth grade in 2004; he and his sisters were originally public school students but became home-schoolers after the CPS complaints were made.
In February 2005, police obtained a warrant searched the Haynes residence. They had
interviewed Cody's sisters several times since their placement in foster care.
Initially the girls said nothing had happened to their brother, but later Cody's
oldest sister told investigators that he had been beaten severely inside his home the day he vanished. Police searched for traces of blood in the apartment's kitchen to back up the sister's story, but the flooring there had been replaced after Cody's disappearance and without the landlord's knowledge or consent. A second search was made and police seized a computer and Richard's Chevrolet Suburban. They also searched Harding's car. Authorities made what they termed a "significant discovery" during one of these searches, but have not elaborated on what exactly it was they found.
Cody may have left of his own accord, but after receiving the information from his sister investigators announced that he could be the victim of a homicide. They have no evidence that he was killed inside his home, but the fact that he has not been heard from in so long is indicative that he met with foul play. Due to his age and family background, Cody is considered to be in danger. His case was turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in October 2005; it remains unsolved.

The possibilities:

- Cody was angry about being punished and ran away from home. (This was the initial police theory. However, it seems less likely that he would be missing of his own accord for this long, especially since he was only 11 when he disappeared.)

- Cody was angry and ran away, then later met up with someone who harmed him. (Maybe not the most likely scenario, but always possible.)

- Cody was killed by his father and/or stepmom. Perhaps he was caught sneaking out and was physically abused, which led to his death. (Normally we do not like to blame the families of the missing. However, this unfortunately seems very possible, especially once you read about his father's little trip that night.)

- Some have suggested a connection to that infamous pedophile/murderer, Joseph Edward Duncan III (most famous for the brutal killings of four members of Groene/McKenzie family). However, a poster on Websleuths reported hearing that this had been ruled out.

- Cody was abducted from his bedroom in the middle of the night. (Unlikely, but possible. There is no evidence of an abduction.)

A child's skull was found in a field in Ritzville, Washington, in the summer of 2005. Could it be Cody's? Local media has suggested both him and Sofia Juarez, missing from Kennewick, as possible matches, although DNA has yet to be successfully obtained from the skull. Until and unless it is identified as Cody's, I will continue to treat his case as a missing child.

The nightmare began a little over four years ago.
Little Sofia Juarez of Kennewick went for a walk and never returned. What happened to her is a mystery.
As the agonizing days immediately following her disappearance turned into heartsick months, her family has not given up hope of finding her.
Neither has the Tri-City community.
A renewed effort has begun to locate the girl who would now be 9 years old.
Posters of what she looked like when she disappeared and what she may look like today have been put on the sides of several semi-trucks owned by Gordon Trucking, a family-owned business based in Pacific committed to reuniting missing children with their families.
Under her photos is a phone number people can call if they've seen the girl. The idea
is to have as many people as possible see Sofia's picture in the hope it could spark the one important tip that would lead to finding her.
Kennewick police say her case continues to be investigated as a missing and endangered child, and detectives continue to receive tips about it.
In fact, police say they have gotten about 850 tips since the little girl went missing, some from as far away as Louisiana, Texas, Minnesota, California, New Mexico, Arizona and elsewhere.
Yet the search continues.
The new posters of Sofia displayed on the semi-trucks are part of a two-year-old program called Operation Homeward Bound. It is coordinated by the Washington State Patrol, but wouldn't happen without the help of businesses that include Gordon Trucking, the graphics company IMAGIC of California and Budget Auto Wrecking of Kent, all of which have donated time, services and money.
Losing a child is among a parent's worst fears. Sofia
was 5 years old when she asked permission to join another household member for a trip to the convenience store. She left so shortly after he did, it was assumed she would catch up to him. But when he returned, he said he never saw her.
Within hours, Kennewick police, the Washington State Patrol and officers from around the Tri-Cities began looking for the girl. Divers searched the Columbia River and a helicopter with a thermal-imaging camera from the Washington Army National Guard was brought in to help.
They never found a trace.
Of course, her family will never give up believing they might one day
be reunited with Sofia. It is a sign of a caring community that the Tri-Cities
continues to keep that hope alive.

Child's skull found in Ritzville, Washington in 2006

When the FBI tried to do a DNA test on the skull, they also were not able to extract enough DNA. They apparently hope, though, that someday they will have the technology to know who this little one is. Also, since it is not known for sure if it is Cody or Sofia, we still can hope that they will be found safe!

DNA tests fail to identify child's skull found near Ritzville

RITZVILLE — DNA tests have failed to establish the identify of a child
whose skull was found last summer in a field by U.S. Highway 395, and Adams
County Sheriff Douglas Barger hope the FBI can do better.
Scientists at the
health sciences laboratory of the University of North Texas in Forth Worth were
unable to extract enough DNA from the bones, Barger said Wednesday.
"The FBI
thinks they might be more successful," he said. "I hope they are, because we've
got to identify who it is."
A farmer found the skull in three pieces Aug. 12
in a field just south of this Eastern Washington town, and no other bone
fragments were found despite an extensive search covering about 100 acres. The
bones had been damaged by field burning.
Investigators have said the skull
might be from one of two missing children - Cody Haynes, 11, who vanished from
his family's home in Kittitas in September 2004, or Sofia Juarez, 5, was last
seen in Kennewick in February 2003. Kennewick is about 70 miles southwest of
Ritzville, and Kittitas is about 120 miles to the west.

Sofia Juarez: Photos to be shown nationwide on semi trucks

Other children who have been featured in this program are Shania Supanich (presumably the one found safe in Montana), Agueda Arias, Sofia Hernandez, and Francisco Rios-Carriere. Andre'anna Jackson was supposed to also be featured when the program was launched, but her remains had already been found. It seems to be exclusive to missing children from the state of Washington.

State Patrol is extending the search for Sofia Juarez, missing from Kennewick

Gordon Brothers Incorporated has postered the
pictures on the side of some of their trailers along with the words, "Have you
seen me?" The trucks will travel nationwide with the hopes someone will
come up with the key clues police need.
Sofia's mother calls it another sign
of hope.
"It's really exciting. It's something new for us. And
I'm really hoping that it really works and sooner or later we have, we're going
to have results for it," said Maria Juarez.
The posters are part of a
program between the trucking company, Kennewick Police and the State Patrol.
This is the sixth missing person statewide to be posted on a truck since the
program started.
One person has already been found in Montana.

The Kennewick Police Department and the Washington State Patrol are expected today to discuss a renewed effort to find Sofia Juarez, who has been missing for more than four years.
The new partnership will put Sofia's picture and contact information on five semi-trucks owned by Gordon Trucking, based in Pacific as part of the two-year program called Operation Homeward Bound.
The trucking company operates throughout the continental United States. The goal of the program is to have as many people as possible see Sofia's picture, which could help spark the one critical tip that would lead to finding her.
This past February marked the fourth anniversary of the girl's disappearance from her home on 15th Avenue in Kennewick. She would be 9 years old. Her case continues to be investigated as a missing and endangered child, according to police.
This would be the second time her picture was posted on a semi-truck. In 2003 a program called Operation Lookout, based in Everett, put as many as 100 pictures of missing children on trucks traveling across the country.
Sofia also was featured on a car during a NASCAR race and on an electronic billboard in New York City's Times Square. She has been featured on TV, nationally and in Mexico.
Detectives continue to receive tips about the case although they are little closer to finding her than they were after she disappeared.
On Feb. 4, 2003, Sofia reportedly asked permission to tag along on a trip to a convenience store about 8 p.m. with an adult who lived in the house. She loved sweets and had a dollar to spend. The store was less than a half-mile away.
But when the adult returned alone about 9 p.m., he told Sofia's grandmother that the little girl had not joined him and that he hadn't seen her.
Within hours, Kennewick police, Washington State Patrol troopers and officers from other departments as well as off-duty officers began searching for the girl. A Washington Army National Guard helicopter with a thermal-imaging camera was brought in to help. Divers searched the Columbia River.
Detectives on the case have chased down tips in Louisiana, Texas, Minnesota, California, New Mexico, Arizona and elsewhere.

Details of Disappearance
Ashley was last seen at a local public pool on July 6, 2004 in St. Joseph, Missouri. She was persuaded into leaving the state with a 32 year old sexual predator, Christopher Hart. He picked her up near the pool in his dad's gray 1995 Pontiac Bonneville with Missouri license plate, 377MPY.In September 2004, Hart was arrested in Olympia, Washington, and is awaiting extradition back to Missouri. Hart exhibited bizarre and unorthodox behavior while in jail. He has been sent to Western State Hospital for a mental evaluation, prior to his arraignment in court. Since his arrest, he has been uncooperative about Ashley's whereabouts or the location of the car.
Ashley's mother describes her as a beautiful girl who loves to read
and has a great sense of humor.
In 2005, the Carol Sund Foundation offered a $5000 reward for any information regarding the whereabouts of Ashley Martinez.

Ashley Martinez: Included in On the Road to Remember 2007, other news

The On the Road to Remember Tour is held by the CUE (Community United Effort) Center, a non-profit missing persons organization based in North Carolina. It stops in various locations in several states and holds rallies to gain attention for local missing people who have become "cold cases".

This year their schedule included a stop at the Krug swimming pool in St. Joseph, Missouri, on June 14. Ashley Martinez, then 15 years old, was last seen there on July 6, 2004. She is believed to have run away with a 32-year-old convicted felon named Christopher Hart. He was arrested in Olympia, Washington, on September 4, 2004, but Ashley was not with him. He had been promising to take her to California, or she may be in Nebraska or Kansas City, Missouri. The car they were supposedly traveling in, a stolen grey 1995 Pontiac Bonneville with Missouri license plate 377MPY, has also not been found.
Ashley has bipolar disorder and may engage in dangerous behavior when she does not have her medication. She also has asthma. She did not bring along her medicine or any of her personal belongings. Therefore, she is rightly classified as "endangered".

National Spotlight Shines on Missing People in the Area

A
national spotlight shines on missing people in the Midland Empire. The 4th
Annual Missing Persons Tour made a stop in two area towns. Word of Branson
Perry's disappearance will reach 11 states by the end of June, giving his family
another glimpse of hope that the 26-year-old will soon be found.
"It's an awesome feeling, it makes you feel like there is hope, that there
are people that really do care," Becky Klino, mother, said.
Monica Caison is leading the "On the Road to Remember" tour spreading the
word and pictures of 75 missing adults across 5,100 miles.
"A lot of these cases that we are featuring, are cases that have gone cold,
because they weren't promoted properly at the beginning, of they just didn't
have enough information to go on," Caison said.
For the remaining 2,400 miles the van will attract the attention of many
people in small and big communities. They also want to grab some media
attention.
"It's important that we get the press involved, and get Perry's name out,"
Ben Espey, Nodaway County Sheriff, said. "We're still looking for clues and
leads that we can follow up on."
Branson's mother said it's vital to keep these cases front and center. So
far the group has helped bring in several new leads in other cases. Every
opportunity to get Branson's name to one more person could mean one more
clue.
"You feel like you're very alone and with organizations like this, you feel
like you are embraced with a lot of love, a lot of support and it gives you
strength," Klino said.
"We don't have a reason or rhyme or why, we're here for them and its just
one more piece that it gives them to get through another day," Caison
said.
The tour is sponsored by the community uniter effort organization. The tour
features mostly missing adults, whom they said are often left by the wayside.
The group also stopped by Krug Pool to feature Ashley Martinez. Her family
has been searching for her since she disappeared from this same area three years
ago. The runaway would now be 18 years old.
Her mother said having the community united effort feature her daughter's
story in 11 states could lead to her where abouts. Martinez's family and friends
gathered at the park wearing pins with her picture on it.
They said they're not giving up hope on finding her. For more information

Christopher Kerze now missing 17 years, Eagan, Minnesota

I was introduced to Christopher Matthew Kerze's case when one of his mother's friends emailed me last September. She gave an overview of the circumstances of his disappearance like what you will read below. She also said that two years ago (maybe three years by now), the local police received a letter postmarked in Seattle, Washington, asking them to stop looking for Christopher and saying that he will come home when he is ready. His family thinks he might be in that area, and they wonder if he had a head injury which made him forget who he was and where he was from.

Christopher, if you are reading this, you have people who obviously love you and miss you and are still hoping that you will return safely even though you have been gone for so long.

Description: A long acid-washed blue denim trenchcoat, a large black cotton
sweatshirt, blue Bugle Boy jeans with pockets at the knees, brown leather boat
shoes, and a zebra-striped Swatch watch.
Medical Conditions: Kerze is
allergic to sulpha drugs. At the time of his disappearance, he was ill with a
fever.

Details of Disappearance
Kerze stayed home sick from school on
the day he disappeared. He was last seen leaving his family's residence in
Eagan, Minnesota on April 20, 1990. He was driving his family's blue Dodge
Caravan at the time of his disappearance. He left a note saying he would return
home at approximately 6:00 p.m., but he never came back. The vehicle was
discovered abandoned one week later, approximately twenty miles north of Grand
Rapids, Minnesota. There was no sign of Kerze at the scene and he has never been
heard from again.
Kerze carried a black leather wallet at the time of his
disappearance. His case remains unsolved. Authorities believe Kerze left his
family's home of his own accord.

Sofia Juarez: New age progression

Today when I was looking at the Charley Project, I found an age progression of Sofia that was done this year (shown at right). I think this looks very realistic; it shows the changes made by the passage of time, but there is enough resemblance to believe it could be the same person.

Back in August, a child's body was found in a field in Ritzville, Washington, and it is possible that it could belong to Sofia. However, this has not yet been proven, and until or unless it is, we should continue to keep our eyes open for Sofia in case she is still alive somewhere.

Four Year Old Search for Sofia Juarez Still Active

KENNEWICK, WA. -- On February 4, 2003, four year old Sofia Juarez walked out of her home with a dollar bill in her hand to go to the grocery store with her grandmother's boyfriend, and then vanished. Her fifth birthday was the next day, but she never had her party, because she disappeared. This resulted in one of the biggest searches in Tri Cities history with every local law enforcement agency, fire department, the F.B.I., the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and hundreds of volunteers. Detectives still don't have any idea what really happened to her, but it isn't for a lack of effort. They've checked into thousands of leads and filed thousands of reports over the last four years and they're frustrated they haven't been able to find this little girl. Sergeant Randy Maynard was on duty the night Sofia disappeared and has been associated with the case ever since. One tip he says they've gotten several times over the last couple of years is that Sofia was hit by a car in front of her house, picked up by the driver and buried somewhere on Jump Off Joe Butte. "There was even a further twist where her remains were excavated from that site on Jump Off Joe Butte and taken to Prosser, and buried out on a farm in Prosser which led us to the search there a year ago June," said Sgt. Maynard. But like all of the other leads, no sign of Sofia. Then in August of 2006, a skull of a child was found north of Connell. Initial tests were inconclusive, so now it's being examined at the F.B.I. Missing Children Unit in Virginia. Detective Craig Hanson has been involved with the Sofia case since the beginning. He's been the lead detective on the case since May of 2005, the third lead detective. He's investigated more than 150-tips just since he's taken over, but again, nothing's panned out. "It's been very frustrating. One, we don't know originally what happened to Sofia. We've have various accounts coming through the last nearly four years of what's happened to her. They've ranged from familial abductions to stranger abductions and so on," said Det. Hanson. Detective Hanson talks to Sofia's mother frequently and follows every single lead, with the hope that one of them will help them figure out what happened to Sofia Juarez. "The Department here is committed to find her one way or another. Whether it happens today or 20-years from now during my retirement party, we want to find her," said Hanson. When both Maynard and Hanson were asked if they think there's a chance Sofia is still alive, they said they hope so, but they know that after this much time, the odds don't look good. The F.B.I. has a new agent in town who's been assigned the Sofia Juarez case. She's currently reviewing the case, which remains very active. Many people are still holding out hope this little girl will be found alive and returned to her mother.

Medical Conditions: Martinez suffers from bipolar disorder
and is supposed to take medication. She left her medicine behind when she vanished. Martinez may have violent mood swings and exhibit impulsive, risky behavior when she is not taking her medication as directed; she could be a danger to herself and others.

Details of Disappearance
Martinez was last seen at 12:00 p.m. on July 6, 2004, when she was dropped off at the Krug Pool in the vicinity of St. Joseph Avenue and Krug Park in Saint Joseph,
Missouri with her younger brother. When her mother came to get them later, only
the brother was waiting; Martinez had disappeared.
Subsequent investigation showed that Martinez had planned to run away to California with Christopher M. Hart, a 32-year-old living close to her home. He was on parole for second-degree assault and has also been convicted of drug possession, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest. He and Martinez were going to go to California.
Eleven days after Martinez's disappearance, Hart was arrested in Olympia, Washington for purse-snatching. He gave the Washington officials a false name and as a result they did not know he was wanted in Missouri, so he was released. On
September 7, two months after Martinez's disappearance, Hart was arrested again
after Washington police discovered his true identity and the charges against him
in Missouri. He had been staying with a cousin in the Olympia area.
Washington investigators found no sign of Martinez, or the stolen gray 1995
Pontiac Bonneville with Missouri license plates numbered 377MPY, which she and
Hart had allegedly been traveling in. Hart's cousin said he had not seen
Martinez or ever heard Hart mention her. Hart, who remains in custody, has
refused to divulge any information whatsoever on Martinez's whereabouts. He
began acting bizarrely while in jail and was sent to the state mental hospital
for a psychiatric evaluation.
Martinez may still be in the local area or she may be in the Kansas City, Missouri area. There is no evidence that she ever arrived in Washington. When she disappeared, she left behind all her personal belongings, including her medication. She has a history of running away from home, but has never left the state and had never been gone this long. Her case remains unsolved and is still classified as a runaway.

Sofia Juarez now missing 3 years--Kennewick, Washington

Last Saturday, February 4, marked three years since a little girl named Sofia Juarez mysteriously disappeared in Kennewick, Washington.

Details of Disappearance
Sofia was last known to
be playing with her brother in her bedroom between 8:15 and 9:15 p.m. on
February 4, 2003, the day before her fifth birthday. She left the bedroom and
told her mother, Maria Juarez, that she was going to the store five blocks away.
She was supposed to be accompanied by her grandmother's boyfriend, Jose Lopez
Torres. Maria gave Sofia a dollar to spend at the store and assumed she caught a
ride with Torres. Sofia did not get into the car, however, and Torres left
without her. No one saw her leave the house. When Torres returned from the store
at 9:45 p.m. and said Sofia had not gone with him, Maria alerted the
authorities.
Sofia's disappearance was treated as an abduction from the
outset and an Amber Alert was issued. It was canceled after she was not located
within 36 hours. Police continue to believe she was abducted. They have
contacted Sofia's father and say he was cooperative and is not a suspect in the
case. Her father has never met her and is uncertain if he is in fact her
biological parent. Torres has also been ruled out as a suspect in Sofia's
disappearance.
A ten-year-old relative of Sofia's who lives in her home says
he saw her walking down the driveway at about the time she disappeared,
accompanied by a man dressed in a black sweatshirt, black pants, and black
shoes. This sighting has not been confirmed.
A week after Sofia's
disappearance, police announced an interest in a 35-year-old neighbor of
Sofia's. Kevin L. Ireland, who has a record for minor sex crimes, allegedly made
a suspicious comment about Sofia's disappearance over the phone. He took a
polygraph about her disappearance and police served a search warrant on his
house. They were also interested in the Ireland's car, a white Ford Tempo panel
van. A similar van was spotted a few blocks from Sofia's residence at around the
time she disappeared. Ireland was arrested on a traffic warrant unrelated to
Sofia's case a week after her disappearance, and while in jail was charged with
telephone harassment in relation to the comments he had made about Sofia's case.
He has pleaded innocent to the harassment charge and being called a person of
interest but not a strong suspect in Sofia's apparent abduction.
Authorities, in May 2003, announced that in addition to the panel van they
were looking for a mid-nineties model full-sized faded orange van with a license
plate which had a double J in the number. The van's driver was a while male with
a thick blond beard, between 35 and 40 years old. A witness recalled seeing the
van in the area around the time of Sofia's disappearance. Police do not know if
the van is connected to her case.
Extensive searches have produced little of
evidentiary value in Sofia's case. Searchers found a pair of overalls and a pair
of little girl's shoes in the area, but neither belonged to her. Nothing else
was ever located.
Sofia is described as a loving and vivacious child. Her
mother says she is shy and would not go with a stranger without a fuss. Maria
believes that Sofia's kidnapper was someone the child knew and trusted. She
enjoyed playing with Barbie dolls and putting on makeup at the time of her
disappearance, and her favorite food is hamburgers from the fast food restaurant
chain Burger King. Despite a search which extended to Mexico and fairly
extensive media coverage, including profiles on the television crime show
America's Most Wanted and her photograph of the side of a NASCAR racing car,
Sofia remains missing and her case is unsolved.
