Residents go missing without a trace around Clearwater
This is the
second part of a two-part series about people who have disappeared from
Clearwater over the last three decades.

CLEARWATER – Jayme Lynn Engstrom was
only 22 years old when she disappeared, but they were hard years.
The Pennsylvania native moved to Pinellas County with her mother when she
was 10, following the breakup of her parents, who had married at 17. She went to
Dunedin Middle and High schools, but dropped out at 16.
She got in with a bad crowd, began stealing and writing bad checks, started
using drugs and soon became a crack addict, according to interviews her mother,
Vicki Lynn Engstrom, gave to sheriff’s deputies and the press shortly after the
disappearance.
She went back to Pennsylvania in 1989, allegedly in fear for her life
because of a drug deal gone awry in Florida. There, she moved in with a man and
bore him twin sons, but the relationship was stormy, and Engstrom spent a lot of
time in abuse shelters or jail.
She returned to Pinellas County in 1991, bringing her boyfriend and sons
with her. But they later moved back to Pennsylvania and subsequently came back
to Florida.
Along the way, she was in and out of rehab and racked up an extensive
arrest record for solicitation for prostitution, soliciting for a lewd act, drug
possession and theft. She also gave birth to a daughter, whom she put up for
adoption, and split up with her boyfriend when she caught him cheating on
her.
Engstrom stayed with friends in the area around N. Fort Harrison Avenue.
She was last seen at 8:43 p.m. on Feb. 20, 1994, when Clearwater police stopped
her for walking down the middle of the road in the 1300 block of Cleveland
Street. There was speculation, but no proof, that she fell victim to James M.
Randall, an alleged serial killer of mid-Pinellas prostitutes at that
time.
Engstrom would now be 36 years old. When she disappeared, she stood
5-foot-4 and weighed 115 pounds. She is white, with blonde hair, blue eyes and a
rose tattoo on her upper right arm. Anyone with information regarding her

Details of Disappearance
Engstrom was last seen at 8:43 p.m. on February 20, 1994 in the
1300 block Cleveland Street in Clearwater, Florida. Authorities stopped her
while she was walking in the middle of the street at the time. Engstrom has
never been heard from again. Her mother, who last saw her in January 1994,
reported her as a missing person in December 1995, almost two years after she
went missing. Engstrom stayed in touch with her family by telephone several
times a month, but they have not heard from her since her disappearance.
Prior to her disappearance, Engstrom had been arrested multiple times for
prostitution, theft and drug charges, but her criminal record abruptly stopped
after early 1994. She was a known prostitute in the Clearwater area, and lived
near north Fort Harrison Avenue. She had also been arrested for prostitution in
Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Several other local prostitutes were murdered
around the same time Engstrom disappeared. Investigators believe the women,
including Engstrom, may have been victims of a serial killer, but no suspects
have been named.
Engstrom has connections to West Springfield,
Massachusetts; McKeesport, Pennsylvania; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is
the mother of twin sons. Her disappearance remains unsolved.

SYNOPSIS: Ann and Mike Kibalo married after dating for nine months. Only
one thing was missing to make their lives complete - a child. Two and a half
years after they were married, Ann gave birth to Samantha and the couple brought
her home to Suffern, New York. But their joy was short-lived. According to Mike,
Ann began behaving erratically almost immediately. She allegedly began yelling
at Mike saying that she didn't need him anymore. The following afternoon, Mike
returned home from work to find all the furniture missing. They baby's room was
also completely cleaned out. Mike called his mother-in-law. He claims Ann
answered the phone and told him the marriage was over and that he would never
see their daughter again. According to Mike, Ann told him that she had called
the police and reported that Mike beat her up and that he was also harming
Samantha. Police later determined that there was no evidence of abuse. Mike
Kibalo sued for divorce and sole custody of Samantha. As the divorce case weaved
through the legal system Ann was ordered by the court to share custody of
Samantha with Mike.
After a weeklong visit with Ann, Mike said Samantha was
returned to him with bruises on her face. Mike immediately took Samantha to the
family pediatrician. The doctor said that the bruise was three to five days old
- which means that it most likely occurred while Samantha was with her mother. A
court-appointed psychiatrist was assigned to evaluate Mike and Ann's fitness as
parents. While no determination was made as to how Samantha got the bruises, the
psychiatrist concluded that there was something odd in the way Ann was treating
her daughter. Over a span of 11 months Ann took Samantha to 7 doctors on 33
occasions. She also reportedly hired 23 lawyers and 11 psychiatrists - according
to some, a classic behavior of a person suffering from Munchausen's Syndrome by
Proxy. The final diagnosis was that Ann had a severe personality disorder with a
mixture of traits from several disorders. Soon Mike Kibalo was awarded full
custody of Samantha.
But the ordeal was far from over. Ann had appealed the
court ruling and she still had a right to see her child. The day before the
court made it's final decision on the appeal, Mike brought Samantha to the
police station for a scheduled overnight visit with Ann. Mike returned the
following day to pick up his daughter but Ann never showed up. All efforts to
find them have failed, leaving Mike Kibalo's life in ruins. Mike fears that his
daughter is in grave danger.
Two months later, police discovered Anne's SUV
abandoned in a Brooklyn parking garage. But a search of the vehicle provided no
clues as to Ann or Samantha's whereabouts. Both have been missing since February
of 2001. Samantha Kibalo would now be three years old. She has light brown hair
and brown eyes. Ann Kibalo is wanted for kidnapping and unlawful flight to avoid
prosecution. Authorities believe she may be traveling with her red Tibetan
terrier named Vodka. She may also be in contact with medical professionals.

Details of Flight
Skundrich has ties to Florida and Aruba. He is known to abuse both
alcohol and illegal drugs. Ralph Skundrich was last seen at his residence in
Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, on or about January 29, 2005. Skundrich, who
was on pretrial supervision with electronic home monitoring at the time,
allegedly cut off his electronic monitoring ankle bracelet and fled the area. He
had been charged in a criminal complaint on August 19, 2004, with Criminal
Attempt (Burglary), Criminal Conspiracy (Robbery), Criminal use of a
Communication Facility, and Prohibited Possession of a Firearm. A warrant for
his arrest had been issued the same day by the Court of Common Pleas of
Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. These charges stem from an alleged plot by
Skundrich and two accomplices to commit a residential burglary and robbery in
Indiana County, Pennsylvania. The men attempted to carry out the alleged plot on
March 17, 2004, but were instead arrested by law enforcement authorities. A
federal warrant for the arrest of Skundrich was obtained on March 6, 2006, in
the Western District of Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and he was
charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He may be traveling with his
girlfriend, Gina Farren-Brown, who is not a fugitive from the law. SHOULD BE

Yansis Juarez now missing 5 years, Miami, Florida

If you do a Google News Archive search on "Yansis Massiel Juarez", you will find several articles on her, ranging from May 24, 2002, to February 20, 2006. Only one of them is in English, and that is the most recent one, a Nancy Grace transcript (also available for free at http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0602/20/ng.01.html). All of them, except for one (translated below), also cost money to access. However, the little beginnings that are visible tell us that she was from Coral Gables, she was Nicaraguan, she had satisfactory grades in school, and she did not present any problems. So, if you can look past the way she dressed and decorated herself, you can see a regular girl who is obviously very much missed by her family.

Young Hispanic female disappears and police investigate Satanic "Gothic" cult in Miami

WASHINGTON DC, 26 May 02 (ACI) - The mysterious disappearance
of a young Hispanic female of 15 years of age led the Miami police
investigations towards the "Gothic" movement that had grasped minors in a new
Satanic fashion.
It's been three weeks since the minor Yansis Massiel Juárez
disappeared. A television channel that followed the case linked her with
youth who practice a new cult in Miami. It is the Gothic movement that obligates
its members to show off painted faces, dress totally in black, wear Satanic
decorations and, in some cases, even self-mutilate.
In areas
like Lincoln Road, Biscayne Boulevard and 112th Street, the police have found
participants of the movement in some public places like the Kitchen Club, in
whose environs the neighbors usually find cats and other animals carved up,
possibly in rituals.
"On many occaisions, the parents have no idea of what
their children are living, since these change clothing and make up themselves
inside their cars, before entering the clubs," warned Miami Police detective
Fernando Fernández, who is in charge of the case.
"Already three weeks have
passed since Yansis disappeared, and after so much time it is rare that she has
not communicated with her dear ones," added Fernández.
In declarations to the
newspaper El Nuevo Herald of Miami, the father of the minor, Juan Juárez,
affirmed that he was trusting that his daughter is alive and he asked her to
return home, assuring her that "there will be no reprisals".
According to
Juárez, the minor had friction with her mother, because "she did not like the
clothing or the makeup that she was using. She did not allow her to dress in
that fashion". Nevertheless, he assured that "we never knew that she had
friends from this group. She always arrived early and was with us", he
added.
"When I asked her why she was making herself up in this way, she told
me that it was there because she liked it", explained the father surprised by
the disclosure of the televised images in which his daughter appeared with other
members of the movement.
According to the Herald, Yansis left her home
Sunday, May 5 and said goodbye to her cousin, assuring her that she was
returning soon. Sunday realized 20 days without news of the student.

Besides wearing dark clothing and make-up, at the time she was between 4'10 and 5' tall and weighed between 90 and 110 pounds. She had black hair and brown eyes, with both ears pierced and piercings in her right eyebrow and tongue. She was also carrying a small backpack. At the time she spoke fluent Spanish and her English was poor. If she is still alive--and hopefully she is--she would be 20 years old.

Amy Billig now missing 33 years, Coconut Grove, Florida

I first heard Amy's story on a rerun of Unsolved Mysteries, and I personally think it is one of the most twisted, complicated missing persons cases I have ever heard of. True, there are many different stories and theories about Natalee Holloway's disappearance. But at least there are three major suspects in that case. Almost nothing about what happened to Amy seems certain. I like to try to be an optimist, but of course it gets harder as more time passes. I think that Amy is almost certainly dead, and I wouldn't be surprised if her body has been found but has been lying unidentified in some morgue.

Details of Disappearance
Amy was last seen hitchhiking along Main Highway in Coconut
Grove, Florida on March 5, 1974. She was headed to her father's office to borrow
money from him so she could meet friends later in the day. Amy never arrived at
the office and her friends never saw her that evening. She has never been heard
from again. Amy enjoyed playing the flute and guitar, as well as reading and
writing poetry, at the time of her 1974 disappearance, and was considering
becoming an actress. She often hitchhiked through her neighborhood.
Charles
and Larry Glasser, sixteen-year-old twin brothers, called Amy's family a few
days after her disappearance and claimed to have kidnapped her. They said they
were holding her for $30,000 ransom. The Glassers turned out to be lying; they
did not know Amy and had nothing to do with her disappearance. They were
subsequently charged with extortion. A photograph of the Glasser twins at the
time of their arrest is posted below this case summary.
Amy's mother, Susan
Billig, began investigating her daughter's case in addition to law enforcement's
attempts immediately after Amy disappeared. A photograph of Susan at the time of
Amy's disappearance is posted below this case summary. Susan began receiving
tips from numerous individuals who claimed that Amy had been abducted by members
of The Outlaws or The Pagans, both motorcycle gangs that traveled through the
Coconut Grove area of Florida in 1974. Some people claimed that Amy was alive
and others maintained she had been killed; these tips led Susan on a
cross-country chase through the US and even into Great Britain through the
years. Sometimes Susan would come within days of finding her daughter, but Amy
was never located. She may have used the aliases "Mute," "Sunshine," "Little
Bits," and/or "Mellow Cheryl" while with the bikers.
Paul Branch, a member
of The Pagans, initially told Susan in the late 1970's that Amy was alive and
being held by Pagan members in the U. S. Branch's widow claimed he recanted this
statement on his deathbed in the late 1990's; he then said that Amy had attended
a party thrown by The Pagans in Florida on the night of her disappearance and
died of a drug overdose, and that her body had been taken to the Florida
Everglades by gang members and tossed to the alligators. His widow relayed this
information to Susan.
Amy's camera was located at the Wildwood exit on
Florida's Turnpike shortly after Amy's disappearance. It was turned in by a man
who had heard she was missing. Wildwood would have been on the route the biker
gangs took traveling north. Nobody knows if Amy had the camera when she
disappeared, however; it might have disappeared before she did. The film inside,
once developed, revealed no clues as to her whereabouts. The majority of the
photographs were completely overexposed.
Another sidenote to Amy's
disappearance involved harassing phone calls that Susan began receiving shortly
after Amy vanished in 1974. A then-unidentified male caller informed Susan that
Amy was abducted by members of an illicit sex ring organization and being held
captive. The caller tormented Susan for 21 years until 1995, when FBI agents
were able to trace a call the man made using his cellular phone. Until that
time, the caller always used a pay phone to harass Susan, making him difficult
to apprehend. The caller was identified as Henry Johnson Blair, who worked for
the US Customs Department. A photograph of him is posted below this case
summary. Blair claimed that he was an alcoholic and had an obsessive-compulsive
disorder which caused him to harass Susan; he also stated that he never met Amy
and knew nothing about her disappearance. Blair was sentenced to a two-year
prison term for harassing Susan and has since been released. Susan settled a
lawsuit against him for five million dollars.
The addition of Blair into
this case focuses renewed attention on to a man Amy described in her journal.
Amy wrote that she was considering running away to South America with a man she
called "Hank." Blair's nickname is Hank. A photo developed from a roll of film
in Amy's camera showed a white van which was identical in color and model to a
van Blair drove in 1974. Blair's job with the Customs Department required him to
relocate to South America around the time Amy specified in her journal. Blair
has not been positively linked to Amy aside from his incarceration for the
harassment of her mother, however.
The A & E Network aired a program
about Amy's case on its Investigative Reports series in 1998. The documentary
shows elements of Susan's decades-long search for her daughter with law
enforcement and also provides footage of Susan's meeting with Branch's widow.
Susan accepts his widow's statement at the program's end, but authorities
believe that his widow was lying about his confession in an effort to
financially profit from Amy's disappearance. Amy's father died of lung cancer in
the early 1990s.
Susan co-authored a book about Amy's disappearance in 2001
with Greg Aunapu, called Without A Trace: The Disappearance Of Amy Billig -- A
Mother's Search For Justice. She died of a heart attack in 2005, at age 80.
Amy's case remains unsolved.

A Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warrant for kidnapping was issued for
her on January 15, 2002. She also has warrants for her arrest on charges of

Sidekick Sport with a gold-colored bumper and New York license plates. It has
was recovered in a parking garage in the New York City borough of Brooklyn two
months after the Kibalos disappeared. They may be accompanied by a 12-pound red
miniature Tibetan Spaniel or Tibetan Terrier dog named Vodka. They may frequent
doctor's offices and other medical facilities. Ann and Samantha may be with an
adult female relative. They may be in the New York City, New York area, or in
Palm Beach County or Boynton Beach, Florida; Illinois; or New Hampshire. In
2006, there were sightings of them reported in Santa Fe, New Mexico, but the
reports have not been confirmed.
Samantha is believed to be at risk; her
mother may have been abusing her prior to her disappearance. Ann may suffer from
Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy, which would cause her to harm Samantha and/or
subject her to unnecessary medical treatment. Michael now lives in New Jersey
and is actively searching for his daughter. He believes Ann may be homeschooling
the child, as he cannot find evidence that she is enrolled in school anywhere.
Samantha's case remains unsolved.

Medical Conditions: Ann has a dental condition and may seek medical
treatment for it. She is mentally unstable; she has a severe personality
disorder and several traits from other disorders, and may suffer from
Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy, which could cause her to harm Samantha. Ann is
classified as disabled.

Mother kidnapped daughter from father in February
2001A 7-year-old girl abducted by her mother five years ago might be living in
Santa Fe, according to six eyewitnesses.
Samantha Michelle Kibalo and her mother, Ann Yermak Kibalo, disappeared
from Suffern, N.Y., in February 2001 after failing to return from a
court-authorized overnight visit.
The child’s father, Michael Kibalo, who had sole custody of Samantha, has
been searching for her ever since.
After receiving a tip she might be here, Kevin Gallagher, a lawyer and
friend of Michael Kibalo, visited Santa Fe twice — in February and in September.
He distributed missing-child fliers and talked to six people who said they were
certain they had seen mother and daughter — at a mall, a doctor’s office and
other places.
One woman who talked to the mother and daughter several times described
Samantha as “real quiet, withdrawn.” She said the mother didn’t interact much
with the child.
Michael Kibalo, who now lives in Morris Plains,
N.J., won sole custody of his daughter when she was 11 months old after court
testimony that his former wife hit the child and might suffer from a mental
condition called Munchausen’s Syndrome by Proxy, which could cause her to harm
Samantha or seek unnecessary medical treatment. In a span of 11 months, Ann
Kibalo apparently took her daughter to seven different doctors on 33
occasions.
Two months after their disappearance, Ann Kibalo’s abandoned sport-utility
vehicle was found in a Brooklyn parking garage. Eyewitnesses reportedly later
spotted her in Florida.
Michael Kibalo said FBI profilers have told him his wife and child are
probably moving around a lot, using two or three different aliases. He suspects
his former mother-in-law is helping them because she has refinanced her house
numerous times.
Ann Kibalo has an accounting degree from Brooklyn College and might work as
a bookkeeper. Michael Kibalo and his attorney believe she is home-schooling
Samantha, in part because they have not been able to locate her at any
elementary schools in the area.
Samantha is listed with every known group in the United States that helps
find missing children. The case was featured twice on America’s Most Wanted, a
Fox Television show hosted by John Walsh, whose son was abducted and killed in
1981, as well as on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries in 2002, its final year.
Michael Kibalo said his daughter’s picture will appear in the tax
preparation books issued by the Internal Revenue Service next year.
He says people have told him Santa Fe “might be a good place for people to
hide” because “It’s artsy (and) people can blend in.”
“I actually believe that if she doesn’t turn up in Santa Fe, some day Sam
is going to find herself. If I keep active,” she’ll find me, he said.
Samantha is described as having light brown hair and brown eyes.
Ann Kibalo, now 43, is 5 feet tall, 120 pounds with brown hair and blue
eyes, although she might be wearing brown contacts.

Juarez was last seen leaving her home in Miami, Florida on May
5, 2002. She carried a small backpack at the time. She said she was going to a
friend's home, but never arrived there. She left a note of farewell behind for
her family, but her relatives did not discover the note until several days after
her disappearance.
Juarez has never been heard from again. She is believed
to have left of her own accord and may still be in the Miami area. There have
been several sightings of her around Miami's Metro Rail train stations. Juarez
is affiliated with the gothic sub-culture and frequently wears all black,
gothic-type clothing. Her case remains unsolved.

About a month ago I had an idea to try to get media coverage for seemingly forgotten missing people on the yearly anniversary of their disappearance. Yansis seems to be one of those people. A while ago she was featured on Nancy Grace, and you can read the transcript at http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0602/20/ng.01.html. I also found a couple older Spanish language articles--one three weeks after she disappeared (http://www.aciprensa.com/notic2002/mayo/notic1562.htm) and one dated May 15, 2003 Other than that, just information on missing persons websites. So, I highly encourage those of you who are reading this to try to lobby for local media coverage--and maybe national, too--of Yansis and other long-term missing people featured on this blog and elsewhere.

Amy Billig now missing 32 years, Coconut Grove, Florida

Details of Disappearance
Amy was last seen
hitchhiking along Main Highway in Coconut Grove, Florida on March 5, 1974. She
was headed to her father's office to borrow money from him so she could meet
friends later in the day. Amy never arrived at the office and her friends never
saw her that evening. She has never been heard from again. Amy enjoyed playing
the flute and guitar, as well as reading and writing poetry, at the time of her
1974 disappearance, and was considering becoming an actress. She often
hitchhiked through her neighborhood.
Charles and Larry Glasser,
sixteen-year-old twin brothers, called Amy's family a few days after her
disappearance and claimed to have kidnapped her. They said they were holding her
for $30,000 ransom. The Glassers turned out to be lying; they did not know Amy
and had nothing to do with her disappearance. They were subsequently charged
with extortion. A photograph of the Glasser twins at the time of their arrest is
posted below this case summary.
Amy's mother, Susan Billig, began
investigating her daughter's case in addition to law enforcement's attempts
immediately after Amy disappeared. A photograph of Susan at the time of Amy's
disappearance is posted below this case summary. Susan began receiving tips from
numerous individuals who claimed that Amy had been abducted by members of The
Outlaws or The Pagans, both motorcycle gangs that traveled through the Coconut
Grove area of Florida in 1974. Some people claimed that Amy was alive and others
maintained she had been killed; these tips led Susan on a cross-country chase
through the US and even into Great Britain through the years. Sometimes Susan
would come within days of finding her daughter, but Amy was never located. She
may have used the aliases "Mute," "Sunshine," "Little Bits," and/or "Mellow
Cheryl" while with the bikers.
Paul Branch, a member of The Pagans,
initially told Susan in the late 1970's that Amy was alive and being held by
Pagan members in the U. S. Branch's widow claimed he recanted this statement on
his deathbed in the late 1990's; he then said that Amy had attended a party
thrown by The Pagans in Florida on the night of her disappearance and died of a
drug overdose, and that her body had been taken to the Florida Everglades by
gang members and tossed to the alligators. His widow relayed this information to
Susan.
Amy's camera was located at the Wildwood exit on Florida's Turnpike
shortly after Amy's disappearance. It was turned in by a man who had heard she
was missing. Wildwood would have been on the route the biker gangs took
traveling north. Nobody knows if Amy had the camera when she disappeared,
however; it might have disappeared before she did. The film inside, once
developed, revealed no clues as to her whereabouts. The majority of the
photographs were completely overexposed.
Another sidenote to Amy's
disappearance involved harassing phone calls that Susan began receiving shortly
after Amy vanished in 1974. A then-unidentified male caller informed Susan that
Amy was abducted by members of an illicit sex ring organization and being held
captive. The caller tormented Susan for 21 years until 1995, when FBI agents
were able to trace a call the man made using his cellular phone. Until that
time, the caller always used a pay phone to harass Susan, making him difficult
to apprehend. The caller was identified as Henry Johnson Blair, who worked for
the US Customs Department. A photograph of him is posted below this case
summary. Blair claimed that he was an alcoholic and had an obsessive-compulsive
disorder which caused him to harass Susan; he also stated that he never met Amy
and knew nothing about her disappearance. Blair was sentenced to a two-year
prison term for harassing Susan and has since been released. Susan settled a
lawsuit against him for five million dollars, but Blair will probably never be
able to pay the full amount.
The addition of Blair into this case focuses
renewed attention on to a man Amy described in her journal. Amy wrote that she
was considering running away to South America with a man she called "Hank."
Blair's nickname is Hank. A photo developed from a roll of film in Amy's camera
showed a white van which was identical in color and model to a van Blair drove
in 1974. Blair's job with the Customs Department required him to relocate to
South America around the time Amy specified in her journal. Blair has not been
positively linked to Amy aside from his incarceration for the harassment of her
mother, however.
The A & E Network aired a program about Amy's case on
its Investigative Reports series in 1998. The documentary shows elements of
Susan's decades-long search for her daughter with law enforcement and also
provides footage of Susan's meeting with Branch's widow. Susan accepts his
widow's statement at the program's end, but authorities believe that his widow
was lying about his confession in an effort to financially profit from Amy's
disappearance. Amy's father died of lung cancer in the early 1990s.
Susan
co-authored a book about Amy's disappearance in 2001 with Greg Aunapu, called
Without A Trace: The Disappearance Of Amy Billig -- A Mother's Search For
Justice. She died of a heart attack in 2005, at age 80. Amy's case remains
unsolved.

Yansis Juarez--Miami, Florida

Yesterday's episode of Nancy Grace featured three missing girls from Florida. One of them, Yansis Massiel Juarez, is one of the missing persons whose cases I follow. I was happy that she was featured since it does not seem to me like she gets much media attention.
The photos come from The Charley Project and show Yansis with differing amounts of make-up.

GRACE: Another girl missing in the Sunshine State out of Florida, now
unsolved. This young girl, Yansis Juarez, missing since May 5, 2002. Last seen
by her own sister leaving her own home. Welcome back, everybody. Won`t you help
us tonight? Straight to investigative reporter joining us out of
Miami, Florida, Ismael Cala. Thank you for being with us, Ismael. Bring us
up-to-date.
ISMAEL CALA, INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER: My pleasure, Nancy. And as
you said, almost four years has passed since the last time we saw -- or the
family saw Yansis Massiel Juarez leaving her own house here in Miami. Yansis was
then 15 year old, and she`s born -- she was born in Nicaragua. And all what we
know so far until today is that she left the house. And a few days later, the
police learned about a farewell note that she left in the house. The family said
that they didn`t find the note until probably three or four days later after she
disappeared. The note was written in Spanish and has been translated into
English by Fernando Fernandez, the detective in charge of Yansis` case. And what
to say? It`s a Nicaraguan girl. She`s not an American, Caucasian, white female
girl. She was born in Leon, Nicaragua. And as I said, she came with her father
and siblings to the country claimed by Elda Rodriguez (ph), her mother, under
the Nicaraguan adjustment and Latin American Relief Act signed by...
(CROSSTALK)
GRACE: OK. OK. OK. OK. OK. OK. I get it. She`s not born
here. Don`t care! I want to hear the circumstances surrounding her disappearance
and what has been done to find her. Can you give me that, Ismael, in a nutshell?
CALA: Yes. Well, you know, the family called the police. Probably they lost
the first window, according to what the police told us. You know, they were
trying to search on their own, called the friend that she said that she would be
visiting. And probably five, six hours later, they made the first call to the
police, so that first window was lost to search for Yansis. And the police, the
city of Miami police detective who started handling the case. And of course,
they treated at the beginning as a possible runaway. A few days later...
GRACE: Oh, uh-oh. Go ahead.
CALA: A few days later, they learned some
pieces of information that got to them that were important to the case,
according to what they released on a news release on May 22, 2002. According to
sources, 15-year- old Yansis Massiel Juarez is part of gothic, a lifestyle that
includes devil worship...
GRACE: OK. OK. Got you.
CALA: ... witchcraft,
so they...
GRACE: Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I`m not going to ruin this
girl`s chances of ever being found by labeling her as a Goth. Half the kids in
this country claim they`re Goth. That has no bearing unless it can be connected
to someone that was going to meet her, take her somewhere. In fact, it disturbs
me, Renee, that her case may be shoved aside because some people think Goth is
bad.
ROCKWELL: Yes, Nancy. And with the lack of resources with the police
department, when you have a police department that founds out somebody has run
away, sometimes they don`t put the attention needed.
GRACE: Man, you`re not
kidding. And to Detective Fernando Fernandez, he`s with the Miami P.D. in the
missing persons unit, Detective, thank you for being with us. What can you tell
us about the status of the case of Yansis Juarez?
DET. FERNANDO FERNANDEZ,
MIAMI POLICE: The case is active. We are constantly supervising the case. I`m
trying different ways...
GRACE: Well, what are you doing? What are you
supervising?
FERNANDEZ: Well, we supervise, for example, if there is an
application for a Social Security number, an application for an I.D. in another
state, a driver`s license. We are constantly sending the flyers through the
locator system, which is a network of police enforcement, that directs a flyer
directly to different law enforcement agencies throughout the country.
GRACE: Detective, Detective, where was she going when she left the house?
FERNANDEZ: She was going to a friend`s house, according to the
statement...
GRACE: OK.
FERNANDEZ: ... released by her sister.
GRACE: What would her route have been? Was she walking or driving?
FERNANDEZ: She would be walking.
GRACE: OK. How far away was it?
FERNANDEZ: No more than a mile.
GRACE: OK, a mile. And where was it exactly? Was it in Miami?
FERNANDEZ: In the city of Miami, yes.
GRACE: OK. What part of the city?
FERNANDEZ: In the south end of the city.
GRACE: And how long before police started serious searching for the girl?
FERNANDEZ: Well, the report was not given to us until hours later. And
after a report is taken, the first step is to put the information into the NCIC
system...
GRACE: Right.
FERNANDEZ: ... which is a system that takes the information...
GRACE: Right.
FERNANDEZ: ... nationwide.
GRACE: I just wanted to know how much time passed. And, Detective, thank
you for the information regarding NCIC.Rosie, could you put up this girl`s
picture again? Yansis Juarez, just 15 years old, a beautiful girl. Hey, hey,
hey, the other picture. I don`t want her all Gothed up. Maybe somebody can
recognize this. I doubt she`s wearing the Goth makeup today. To Dr. Robi Ludwig,
take a look at this. This is a gorgeous girl. Do you think this gothic lifestyle
had anything to do with her disappearance?
LUDWIG: Not necessarily. I mean, being Goth means you have an affiliation
with a melancholic view of the world. Having said that, any time...
GRACE: I thought it meant you`re mad at your parents so you wear black
lipstick.
LUDWIG: Which can make you sad. You know, right, I mean, adolescents flirt
with so many different roles that it doesn`t mean that she brought it on
herself. If anything, just being a adolescent, a beautiful girl, can make you
vulnerable to crimes and people who can`t help themselves with assaulting young,
vulnerable women.
GRACE: And to Marc Klaas, president, Beyond Missing, five hours passed.
Look, cases have been solved when a lot more time has passed than five hours
before the person`s reported missing. But in those five hours, what are the
stats, Marc?
KLAAS: Well, 74 percent of the children that are murdered as a result of an
abduction are murdered within the first three hours. But I think that this case
has some other interesting issues. First of all, there`s very little resource
for Spanish-language missing -- for Latina missing girls. You don`t find the
National Center for Missing and Exploited Children with a mirror site in
Spanish. You have to depend upon the Spanish-language resources. It`s even
difficult to get a Spanish-language flyer made. What I would suggest is, if they
do that, and if they start passing that around in the Gothic section of Miami,
because there very well may be a connection between the things that she was
interested in then and the things that she`s doing now. There have been
sightings. I would inundate that area with Spanish- and English-language flyers.
GRACE: There have been sightings, correct?
KLAAS: As I understand, there have been sightings, and they come in on
rather a regular basis.
GRACE: This case is not over yet. Remember, when this girl went missing,
she`s just a little girl, 15 years old. She should be on the cheerleading team
and baby-sitting. Please help us tonight find Yansis Juarez. We`ll be back with

"Chat" that she actually was on?
CALA: Well, the show is about the Gothic movement and how teenagers get
into that. And Yansis was particularly asked about if she had been in connection
with the rituals, you know, those satanic rituals, let`s say sacrifices of
animals, self-mutilation...

GRACE: Well, of course this girl had not been in a satanic ritual. That`s
insane.
CALA: No, no, she said -- exactly. She said that she hadn`t done it.
GRACE: She just celebrated Christmas.
CALA: Exactly. She said, "I haven`t done it, and I`m interested in learning
about them." That was the only things that she said on the show.
GRACE: But wait a minute, wait a minute. Very quickly, Detective Fernandez,
if this shows with this little girl was seen all across the world, this is an
international cable channel, what does that mean for your investigation as to
who took this girl?
FERNANDEZ: Well, we had to keep all our options open. So with the
information that we received, we have to investigate it, whether it is that
she`s involved in a Gothic or that she`s (INAUDIBLE) taken by somebody, we have
to make sure that we investigate every aspect of possible information...
GRACE: Well, did you? Did you investigate the show and leads from the show?
FERNANDEZ: Yes, ma`am. We investigated. We went to different locations
where the Gothics gather.
GRACE: Right.
FERNANDEZ: And different locations for dancing and things like that. And we
were able to determine that the majority of the Gothics are just there for the
style, the style of clothing.
GRACE: Right.
FERNANDEZ: And just to group themselves, just like hip-hops, or rappers, or
rockers in school, will gather, you know?
GRACE: To identify.
FERNANDEZ: Identify themselves.

Last Friday, February 3, marked five years since a little girl named Samantha Kibalo was abducted by her non-custodial mother.

Details of Disappearance
Samantha was last seen in Suffern, New York
on February 3, 2001. She was abducted by her non-custodial mother, Ann Yermak
Kibalo, during a court-ordered vistation. Samantha's father has custody of her.

A Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warrant for kidnapping was issued for
her on January 15, 2002. She also has warrants for her arrest on charges of
unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, custodial interference, and unauthorized
use of a motor vehicle. Her last known address was in New Hyde Park, New York.
Ann and Samantha were originally traveling in a black four-door 1996 Suzuki
Sidekick Sport with a gold-colored bumper and New York license plates. It has
since been recovered in a parking garage in the New York City, New York borough
of Brooklyn. They may be accompanied by a 12-pound red miniature Tibetan Spaniel
or Tibetan Terrier dog named Vodka. They may frequent doctor's offices and other
medical facilities. Ann and Samantha may be with an adult female relative. They
may be in the New York City, New York area, or in Palm Beach County or Boynton
Beach, Florida; Illinois; or New Hampshire.
Samantha is believed to be at
risk; her mother may have been abusing her prior to her disappearance. Ann may
suffer from Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy, which would cause her to harm
Samantha and/or subject her to unnecessary medical treatment. Samantha's case
remains unsolved.

short and dyed it blonde. She has worked as an accountant. Medical Conditions:
Ann has a dental condition and may seek medical treatment for it. She is
mentally unstable; she has a severe personality disorder and several traits from
other disorders, and may suffer from Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy, which could
cause her to harm Samantha. Ann is classified as disabled.

This is known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy, meaning the mother uses the
child's fake illnesses to gain attention.
In 95% of cases the mother is the
one abusing the child this way; in other cases, the father, grandparent, or even
babysitter may be the abuser. Some mothers go beyond making up symptoms to
actually causing symptoms.
In time the child can come to believe that he or
she really is sick. Some abused children fear contradicting their mothers, or
feel that no one will believe the truth if they tell it.
